How to create a colour palette for your wardrobe

Folks - you probably know that colour is SO important when it comes to your wardrobe. If you've read The Capsule Wardrobe book, you'll know that picking a colour is crucial. A good selection of colours lets you mix and match more effectively, therefore giving you more versatility and bang for the buck.

In today's blog, I show you ways to choose a colour palette for your own wardrobe.

First up, here's my colour palette that I'm currently using.

(You'll want to update your colour palette every season especially for the "accent / trend" colours)

Choose 3 Primary / Foundation Colours

When it comes to your colour palette, start with 3 - 4 primary / foundation colours. These are neutral or "base" colours, eg. blacks, whites, grey or beiges / creams.

These colours will become the foundation of your wardrobe and are colours worth investing in as they will form the majority of your key pieces.

Pick Your Secondary Colours

Secondary colors are key anchors to your wardrobe. They add colour and interest and should be colours that you really love - so you won't get tired of these any time soon. These are colours that you can feel confident in buying whole pieces in (eg a whole blazer or coat) as you will wear it from season to season.

Select Your Trend Colours

To keep things modern and contemporary, you'll need a couple more colours that reflect the currents trends of the season.

To keep your wardrobe fresh, you'll be changing these colours every season (Winter / Spring / Summer / Autumn) so don't spend a lot on these pieces and consider using them in small amounts (ie accessories or just a few pieces of clothing).

Bonus tips:

1. Don't forget accessories

Use your colour palette to guide your choice in accessories. If you don't consider your accessories in light of your new colour palette, you won't be able to mix and match your outfits with jewels and handbags effectively!

2. Use prints as inspiration

Struggling to choose colours for your palette? Look for prints to inspire you! Pick up a scarf that you gravitate towards colour-wise, or a printed dress you love and really look at the colours. These colours all work as a palette as some designer has done the hard work of picking the colour combination for you, so look to these as your colour palette!

Choosing a colour palette is essential to create your very own capsule wardrobe so that you don't end up with a mish-mash, but ultimately my motto is just have fun with colours!!!
