Runway to Real Way: Miranda Kerr

Based on the initial feedback on what you'd like to read this year, you've asked for more outfit suggestions from this blog and that's exactly what I hope to deliver. I'll be aiming for a mix of blog posts on affordable outfit suggestions, outfits for real shapes / bodies and also celebrity inspired looks and how you can take the Hollywood inspiration from runway to real life (and without the million dollar budget), which is what we're kicking off with today.

First celeb off the rank is the ever gorgeous Miranda Kerr (can her life get any more perfect??? I mean who wouldn't want to be married to that elf dude from Lord of The Rings Orlando Bloom??)

Here she is in a white blouse and floral skirt (Erdem) with nude heels (Lanvin) and a popping red bag- a beautiful combo for a high tea or a chic business meeting. You'll also see my "who-can-actually-afford-$1000-for-a-skirt" alternatives - so you can re-create the outfit on a real-way budget.

Deconstructing the runway look

But I didn't want to just show you where to buy pieces that look similar to Miranda's - I also want to tell you WHY it works because (as you know), my passion is to teach you to learn how to style yourself and not just copy a look.

Let's start with the blouse. What's really important is that the blouse is quite clean and simple. It's not a fussy, frilly blouse with lace or sheer panels or bits of detailing. It's a classic sleeveless shirt style top, and this helps to off-set the floral girliness in the skirt so the outfit looks elegant and snappy, not frou-frou and young. You can choose to have a little cap sleeve if you're conscious about your arms but do not under ANY circumstance pick a blouse in a stiff cotton fabric otherwise you'll take the outfit from fancy lunch to dreary work-schmirk (as my 5-year old niece describes it).

The skirt is fitted - to balance out and bring proportion to the looser top (remember my post on Volume & Proportion?) and give you shape. Note however that the Sheike real-way alternative has a much more asymmetrical hemline than the one worn by Miranda, so you will definitely need heels or wedges - stay away from this look if you are a flatties fan.

Miranda's shoes are also a terrific choice so as not to compete with the colours and prints in the skirt and handbag but if you can't afford Lanvin then stick with the Wanted Shoes real-way pocket-friendly version instead.

Finally the bag. Some of you might be gasping "Red? Well I never would have thought of a red bag with that outfit .... but it works!?" Yes ladies, it does work. And to understand why, revisit my post on choosing colour in accessories as a refresher (it's all about the colour wheel baby!).
