Mastering the art of "business casual"

Written By Wendy Mak

Have you ever been stuck for what to wear to those "in-between" type occasions?

You know, you're not actually in the office or maybe you don't work in a traditional industry, and you're scheduled to meet a business contact for a casual coffee meeting / go to a weekend seminar / attend a networking group event?

Well, the secret's out and the answer is pants!!

Yes. Trousers. But not boring baggy standard suit trousers. I'm talking about the way you can rock some pants in a cool, edgy but not too OTT way.

In a way / style that says "yep I put a bit of effort in today" but also not like you obsessed and changed outfits 5 times (even though we ALL do that!!!)

Whether you choose skinny, tapered, straight or wide legged pants, the trick is to always wear it as part of a mix-and-match ensemble. This is what keeps the look more casual and cool. And fun.

Here are a few examples.

1. The printed pant

The key to printed pants in this context is to save your crazy patterns, florals and animal prints for the weekends. Go with a repetitive, reasonably simple pattern.

If it looks like someone exploded a few tins of paint on your pants you know it's probably a weekend look.

Oh and a word of warning - your husband / partner will never "get" printed pants. Ignore him. You'll rock it and there are some fashion trends men will never understand!

2. The embroidered trouser

A little detail in the trouser goes a long way. Instead of looking like any boring old pant, it becomes a little unique.

Stick to a more neutral colour like a khaki, beige or black. That way you don't end up with the colour & detail both competing for attention.

3. The classic chino

The classic chino never goes wrong, but you MUST snazz it up for it to work. This means a big blinging necklace or accessory of choice, and a silk or satin blouse.

A more tapered leg is a little more elegant, as is a turned up cuff at the bottom. This is an ankle cropped style which I can dress down with a tee and ballet flats or up with a sexier blouse and heels.

You'll recognise both the trousers and wedges as part of the essential 30 items I identify in my book.
