A Lesson In Jewellery

My ABSOLUTE favourite subject is accessories! From jewellery, bags and shoes - I love them all. But while it's easy to pick up a beautiful bag or throw on your amazing shoes, jewellery can be trickier. How much to wear? Is it too much? Is it too little? Does it match? Do I wear earrings and rings and a bracelet? Or just the rings and bracelet?

Here's a quick lesson in jewellery, with four simple rules to help you out everyday.

Keep it balanced

A very trusty and reliable rule of thumb is, if in doubt - let just one piece (or one type of accessory) to shine at a time.

I.e. if you're wearing a statement necklace, let it be the star of your outfit - don't draw attention away from it by wearing drop earrings. Or, keep it simple with a tiny stud.

Same goes for bracelets and rings. Unless you're super confident with rocking the bling, let just one of the two stand out.

So, if you pile on stacks of bracelets, keep the rings to a minimum, and vice versa - if you decide to wear a beautiful cocktail ring, leave the wrist bare.

Keep it event appropriate

Going for brunch with the in-laws? Or heading out to paint the town red at a concert?

Knowing the nature of the occasion and matching it to your accessories can work wonders for your outfit.

For daytime, less formal outfits, try matching your jeans and tee with natural looking pieces that are made with materials such as wood, or even fabric. Meanwhile, night time shenanigans can command more glitter, sparkles and shine.

Price is irrelevant

Contrary to what most people think, jewellery shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Of course, there is a difference between the real thing and costume jewellery. But I personally enjoy the fun and quantity I get to play with when I'm buying costume baubles rather than the real thing.

Ultimately, don't be afraid to mix it all up - no matter where it comes from!

Match your personality

Like our clothes, our accessories should always reflect who we really are.

Are you the classic woman who loves a bit of Audrey Hepburn style elegance and sophistication? Then diamonds and pearls are your best bet.

The free spirit who loves to travel and experience nature? Drop earrings, a little head band or bangles and long strands of necklaces give you the feeling freedom and lightness.

Perhaps you're a modern minimalist who prefers straight clean lines and sharp edges? Silver and white gold pieces that are not fussy or over the top offset your modern aesthetic.

Wear pieces that reflect YOU and make you feel great!

No matter who you are or what your taste in jewellery is, the most important thing is being true to yourself and letting your baubles be a genuine extension of who you are.

Stylishly yours,
