Do You Suffer From Women Entrepreneur Guilt Trips?

Written by Wendy Mak

Guilt. Ah yes – the greatest enemy of women in business (and just women in general).

With so many responsibilities and multiple balls to juggle, it’s hard to “switch off” or (*gasp*) treat ourselves!

I work super hard on my business. To be fair, I do this willingly. I love my business and I want it to be a success, so I don’t begrudge the time and effort I put into it. If I work long hours it’s because I choose to – not because I’m forced to.

But I’m not immune to women entrepreneur guilt trips!

As I share in my video, I felt guilty today as I decided to unshackle myself from the computer and take myself shopping. I just felt like I should be back at my desk, ticking things off my list!

Taking time out from our business is healthy. It’s an important thing to do and something we should not feel guilty about. So – make it a priority this week to take the time to do something *just* for yourself (not your family, not your partner – just YOU).

This is a big conversation. I’d love to hear your views and opinions. How do you take time out? DO you take time out? Do you suffer from women entrepreneur guilt trips? What can we do to help each other out?

Love to hear your thoughts in the comments area below.

Hi Wendy, thanks so much for this post this is such a massive battle for me. Even though my business has given me freedom I feel bad whenever I’m out doing things under the benefit of this freedom. There is always a low level of anxiety about getting back to my desk and ‘doing things’ – even if there isn’t anything actually to be done!! Finding rest amongst small business ownership is my challenge I want to get there and stop feeling guilty. Thank you!

I totally hear you Sally!!! That’s exactly how I felt even though I knew I work hard and deserved the time out. It’s nice knowing we are not alone and we hopefully can work to remind each other to stop and smell the roses! Thanks for connecting xx

Firstly, I NEED to see all of that dress! Can you post a photo, pleeeease?

Secondly, I am the WORST for being overcome by feelings of guilt, so today’s video blog resonated with me. My inner turmoil is more to do with being SO passionate about my business that I want to work on it ALL of the time and therefore would prefer spending time with my business over spending time with my husband and children! Gasp – I am a bad wifey and mother!!! I do force myself to walk away from business tasks on a daily basis but it’s the fact that I am forcing myself to spend time with my loved ones that makes me feel BAD!!!!

Thanks for bringing up another super important topic Wendy 🙂

Great post Wendy, thank you for sharing. Also looks a fab dress.xx
A question how many hours a week would you spend on your business? Do you give yourself a full day off?

Thanks Naomi! It’s really hard to pin down how many hours I spend (I don’t keep track) but it is my full time focus if that gives you some indication. Some days when I’m about to launch something new it is literally “there’s not enough hours in the day” and other days I can afford to be a little more relaxed. Like the day I shot this video – sure I had a “to-do” list but I had zero meetings, no deadlines, so I could afford the time out. x

Totally agree Wendy 🙂 I constantly feel the need to be busy doing something (as this is always something to be done) and feel incredibly guilty when I’m not. I also love love love my business and am happy to spend the countless hours on It that I do (in between looking after a husband, 4 kids, a dog and the house) Most nights I need to remind myself to Go to bed. I watch tele with my laptop on my lap answering emails or sitting on the floor folding and sorting washing. I mean how I just possibly sit??? Tonight I took time out for me to have dinner with some girlfriends, leaving hubby in charge of all the kids. No guilt when I was out but felt dreadful about it when I got home!! It really is insane!!!

I hear you Nadia!! After all it’s Saturday morning and I’m on my laptop!!! I’m glad you love your business. I think the key is if you love it, it doesn’t feel like work. But it’s recognising that sometimes you need some time for you too xxx Enjoy the weekend!! 🙂
